This week we learned that the federal government has heard your voices and listened to our union’s advocacy to strengthen the current Employment Insurance (EI) system with new reforms to better protect all workers, but especially frontline healthcare workers who continue to go above and beyond through the pandemic.

SEIU Healthcare would like to share our recent win regarding Treating Physician Statement (TPS) forms. The Occupational Health and Safety Department had implemented a new medical form earlier this year, known as the TPS form for COVID-19.

Over the past month, there have been multiple incidents where frontline workers at both Michael Garron Hospital and North York General Hospital faced hateful and racist actions at their workplace. These heinous events are a disgusting reminder of the work we must do to overcome the current climate of racial tension and injustice in our society.

Frontline hospital workers at Michael Garron Hospital held a rally today to demand Pandemic Pay for all healthcare workers. Thousands of deserving workers have been shamefully excluded from the temporary $4.00 per hour increase that the government announced on April 25, 2020.

As part of our commitment to openness and transparency, we are informing you of ongoing attempts to get members like you at Michael Garron Hospital to sign certification cards for another union. There is much at stake – if the union attempting a raid receives enough signatures, it will trigger a vote this fall that could jeopardize the hard-earned benefits you’ve gained with SEIU Healthcare at your side.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, SEIU Healthcare, CUPE, and Unifor held a special event to support expanding pandemic pay to all healthcare workers.

On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, the members at North York General Hospital organized a very successful rally to demand Pandemic Pay for all healthcare workers.

SEIU Healthcare condemns all forms of racism, hate and violence. We stand in support with all Black, Indigenous and racialized peoples who are feeling pain, fear, anger, and trauma due to the recent blatant acts of racism and racially-motivated police violence in the United States.

On April 25, 2020, you announced Pandemic Pay for eligible frontline healthcare workers, effective for 16 weeks from April 24, 2020 until August 13, 2020.

Since the Ontario government announced their Pandemic Pay at the end of April, we have been in constant discussions with them regarding positions that were excluded, including MDRD, hospital ward and unit clerks, clerical staff, and recreational staff/activity coordinators.

I want to start by thanking you once again for the critical role you are playing during this COVID-19 pandemic. The dedication you show to your patients, clients and residents is an inspiration to the world.
